Watch the next video: How to Add Names to Genealogy Browser

In last week's newsletter, we told you that along with the new site design, we created videos that help explain how OneGreatFamily is a unique genealogy program. The first video we shared with you last week was the "Introduction to OneGreatFamily".

This week we are spotlighting the video that walks you through how to add names to the OneGreatFamily Genealogy Browser. Adding names to your tree at OneGreatFamily is simple and fast. You can either manually enter them, or import a GedCom file.

Click on the link to view the demo that will show you how to manually enter names at OneGreatFamily:

We hope that you find the new videos helpful in using OneGreatFamily. Hopefully, you will see the benefit being a member of OneGreatFamily will have on your family tree.

OneGreatFamily Says Good-bye to Lisa

A big thanks to Lisa for the brillant genealogy articles she provided to OneGreatFamily members each week.

We hope that you have all enjoyed reading the articles each week by Certified Genealogist, Lisa South, in her column "Lisa Lights the Way." As our featured columnist for over 40 editions of our newsletter, Lisa has been outstanding at helping all of us to better understand a wide range genealogical issues from “Finding your Cherokee Indian Princess” (Cherokee’s didn’t have Princesses) to “Probate Records” to “America at War”.

Lisa is about to take on new additional responsibilities, and, as she put it, life has become too crazy.  She will be supplying articles for the next four newsletters, and then she will be moving on.

Over this past year, she has provided OneGreatFamily members with valuable information and tips on how to find their ancestors. We wish her the very best and will miss all her expert advice and entertaining articles!

What's New?: We Are Looking for a New Lisa

Earn $50 for writing a genealogy article!

We have started our search for our next featured columnist.  We need someone who is passionate and knowledgeable about genealogy, who can write clearly and succinctly, and whose pure enjoyment of genealogy shines through in their writing. As we considered the possibilities, we had an interesting thought.  Given that we have tremendously talented readers of this newsletter who fill all of these criteria, why not try to tap into this incredible resource, and have a little fun with it at the same time.

So if that describes you, won’t you please share your talent and knowledge with all of us?  In each weekly newsletter we would like to feature an article by a genealogist that will help others find their ancestors. If you are interested, here are the details:

1) If your article is posted in the newsletter, we will pay you $50

2) The article must be at least 300 words.

3) Submissions must include your name, phone number, postal mailing address, and an email address.  Entries without these items will not be considered.

3) Any article that is submitted and that we pay for is considered "work for hire" and becomes the property of OneGreatFamily (who retains rights in all media and who can reuse or repurpose the article without further compensation). You grant us permission to use your name with the article.

4) Content of Articles: General genealogy information, information about specific research techniques or ideas about using OneGreatFamily. Please do not submit articles about other paid genealogy services.

We hope to get a very large response. In our experience, many OneGreatFamily members are experts in interesting areas of genealogy research and we hope to create a forum to share that knowledge with others.  We decided to have members submit articles because we want several authors to contribute to the column so there is a full spectrum of genealogy information.

Once you have written an article, submit it to newsletterarticles@onegreatfamily.com for review. Good Luck!

Lisa Lights the Way

LDS Family History Centers

by Lisa South, Certified Genealogist

Having had the opportunity of working in an LDS Family History Center for many years, I sometimes take it for granted that everyone is aware of this genealogical resource. I have often mentioned in previous articles that certain records can be accessed at your local LDS Family History Center. I suddenly realized that some of you who are new to genealogy may not know what or where these libraries are.

The Family History Library is located in Salt Lake City, Utah and is the largest library of its type in the world. This library is free and open to the public. It has records of genealogical interest from all over the world. Many of these records are available through a library loan system; however, they cannot be loaned to your local public library. They must be sent to a local branch of the Family History Library.

There are over 4,000 of these branches, called Family History Centers, in more than 88 countries. These are also free of charge and open to the public. The centers are staffed by volunteers. Each center will have internet access to certain genealogical sites, a large group of reference books on microfiche, and an individualized collection of records, depending on what has been donated to the library. Some of these branch libraries have accumulated quite a few useful books and films, but most are small and have very little that you will be able to use the first time you go.

The major value of these centers is the inter-library loan system. Almost any microfilm or microfiche record available in the Family History Library can be sent to your local center for the cost of mailing the film or fiche. This gives you the ability to search records from all over the world right from where you live.

To locate the Family History Center nearest to you, go to http://www.familysearch.org and click on the library tab. On the webpage that comes up, look for a link toward the bottom labeled, "Click here to locate the nearest family history center." Clicking on this link will take you to a webpage that allows you to search for a nearby Center. Once you have located the nearest center and found out the hours they are open, don't hesitate to check it out. There will be friendly volunteers to help. I know - I am one!
