  •  New at OneGreatFamily: OneGreatFamily to Accelerate Growth, Provide More Value
OneGreatFamily continues to have an increasingly large impact on the lives of genealogists. Genealogists and casual family researchers would find little value in OneGreatFamily if the service were not growing in terms of names, members, and subscribers. OneGreatFamily is now looking at opportunities to push its growth rate even faster.

What does growth mean to you?

The growth of OneGreatFamily means that more people than ever are working on YOUR ancestral lines. The growth in data and membership will lead to new opportunities for collaboration and to have your family tree grow through the automated matching and merging process. Some people think their families are somehow orphaned from the human family and that nobody else has an interest in their genealogy. Although these notions are common, they are rarely true. The real challenge is taking a family line back far enough to find a point where it ties in to the research of others. As OneGreatFamily continues to grow, the likelihood of someone researching more recent generations of your family tree increases.

Growth in subscription revenue leads to new functionality that will help you find ALL of your ancestors. OneGreatFamily is working on tools and features that will help you find your ancestors more easily. Current development is focused on standards for names, dates, and places, which will further reduce duplication within OneGreatFamily and make finding your ancestors easier than ever. OneGreatFamily is also working on ways to further improve the speed and performance of its service and ways to simplify the Genealogy Browser for those who are new to OneGreatFamily.

What challenges are created by growth?

Although everyone benefits from the growth of OneGreatFamily, this growth brings with it certain challenges as well. As OneGreatFamily extends its reach, more people who are new to genealogy will begin using the service. OneGreatFamily is committed to supporting each of its members, which means the customer support and technical support resources must also increase. Training people on how to use OneGreatFamily is a challenge that OneGreatFamily is currently trying to address. Growth also means the technology supporting OneGreatFamily must also be scaled to meet the needs of a growing number of records and members.

Fortunately, OneGreatFamily has a growing number of subscribers who are helping to fund the growth of this extraordinary service. The more OneGreatFamily grows, the more success its members will have in finding their ancestors and connecting their family lines with the rest of the human family tree.

Q&A: When will I find anyone else at OneGreatFamily who is part of my family?

When will I find anyone else at OneGreatFamily who is part of my family?

Between one and three million names are submitted to OneGreatFamily each month, making it the fastest-growing single family tree available online. This database growth benefits everyone who has common ancestry. In many cases, the new names help fill gaps in family trees or provide clues to new genealogy discoveries. In other cases, these names provide additional evidence or support for information that is already part of OneGreatFamily. In any instance where merging and matching takes place within OneGreatFamily, those who share common ancestors have new opportunities to collaborate on their genealogies.

Even with all of this database growth, a few members still haven't seen changes in their family trees. If you are among these individuals, we have a few recommendations:

Be patient - With nearly 500,000 unique visitors each month, someone is sure to submit information on your family tree in the near future. You may not see any growth in your family tree for some time, but then you may see a flurry of activity that affects your family tree.

Be proactive - Find other websites that include your ancestral names and invite those site visitors to participate on OneGreatFamily. Continue to research your family tree to try to take it back to the next generation. With each generation, the probability of being able to find common ancestors in OneGreatFamily increases significantly.

Be watchful - Pay attention to your GenMail notifications, merge indicators (!), and New Stars Messages. We send GenMail email messages each week to let people know if their family trees are growing. If you are not receiving these messages, you may need to update your email address or preferences. You should also continue to visit OneGreatFamily to update your family tree and see if there are any signs of activity on your family tree.

Be careful - Verify the information you have entered into OneGreatFamily is as complete and accurate as possible. This will help other members of OneGreatFamily who may be looking for your family line to know when they have found it. You are likely not the only person trying to find connections to your ancestral lines in OneGreatFamily, so you will want to be as helpful as possible with the information you provide.

As OneGreatFamily continues to grow, we are committed to the success of each of our members in furthering genealogy research and connecting to work that has already been completed in OneGreatFamily.

     Technical Support: Genealogy Browser Compatibility

Why did I get an error when I launched the Genealogy Browser?

The OneGreatFamily Genealogy Browser is a specialized program designed to allow users to quickly and efficiently display, edit, and store genealogical information. This allows you to access our large database of genealogical information in real time. The browser will run on Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, XP, and ME.

Because the Genealogy Browser uses a Windows Active X control to launch, you must have Internet Explorer installed on your computer. A plug-in has been developed to allow you to run the browser from Netscape as well. If you attempt to use the Genealogy Browser from Netscape, you will be prompted to download and install this plug-in.

The Genealogy Browser can be run on Macintosh and Linux-based computers using additional software. Virtual PC is a program that allows you to run PC programs using a Macintosh. CrossOver Office, or free-ware version Wine, is a program that allows you to run Windows programs on Linux. Using these programs, you are able to run Internet Explorer and the Genealogy Browser.

Certain Personal Firewall and Anti-virus software have default settings that prevent the Genealogy Browser from accessing the Internet. Allowing the OneGreatFamily Genealogy Browser or all OneGreatFamily programs access through your firewall will prevent this problem. The reference error 12029 is often displayed when firewall related conflicts occur.

Because the Genealogy Browser uses an Active X control, your Internet Explorer security settings will need to allow you to download and use Active X controls. You can edit these settings by selecting Tools, Internet Options, and Security. Your settings should be at Medium or lower if you are using the default settings. If you have set custom settings, be sure you have selected to allow Active X downloads and scripting.

We hope the above information will be helpful in launching the OneGreatFamily Genealogy Browser. For more information on Genealogy Browser compatibility issues, please see our Frequently Asked Questions.
