     Q&A: Describing OneGreatFamily

How do you best describe OneGreatFamily?

by Jim Ericson - Marketing VP

A journalist recently asked me to verify some information about OneGreatFamily. The journalist had described OneGreatFamily simply as a genealogy database. He had not recognized several of the key concepts behind this revolutionary service. I realized from our exchange that many people don't understand how OneGreatFamily works well enough to be able to describe it to others.

The following, some of which is taken from one of my messages to this journalist, is an attempt to describe OneGreatFamily in a way that reveals the power and uniqueness of this service:
One way to describe OneGreatFamily is a service that lets everyone view the human family tree from his or her own perspective.

Members then get to work with others from around the world who are also viewing OneGreatFamily from their own, unique perspectives. Other members of your group can see what you have done and accepted as your own because they will see OneGreatFamily from your same perspective.

If two people from different groups look at the same person in OneGreatFamily, they may see things quite a bit differently, depending on what has been verified and accepted for each group. OneGreatFamily preserves all discrepancies and variations in its family tree. For example, one group may only have three children listed for someone, while another group has found and accepted five children for the same individual. OneGreatFamily lets each group view the information the way they prefer and lets each group know when conflicts occur with information provided by other groups. You may delete information others have in their family trees from your group, and those others will still see their information the next time they visit OneGreatFamily.

OneGreatFamily is far more than just a database of family trees. OneGreatFamily employs proprietary technology to match and merge family trees, a process that allows further collaboration and saves time and effort by reducing duplication.

OneGreatFamily has also introduced Genealogy Browser as a way for those who use its service to actually review, edit, and update their family tree in OneGreatFamily. The Starfield of Genealogy Browser allows users to see the shape of their entire family tree at once (up to 512 generations). Users can also zoom in and out of this powerful pedigree view to see as many details as they would like.

Other companies require those using their services to identify and compare family trees when trees contain duplicate information. Each tree may contain slightly (or entirely) different information, which makes the process laborious and time consuming. OneGreatFamily, on the other hand, removes duplication and allows people to see all variations at the same time.

OneGreatFamily is a genealogy architecture, database, and software program all combined into one service. Those who consider OneGreatFamily as just another genealogy database are going to miss out on the features that make OneGreatFamily truly unique.

     Technical Support: Genealogy Browser Compatibility

Why did I get an error when I launched Genealogy Browser?

by Ryan Long - Technical Support

The OneGreatFamily Genealogy Browser is a specialized program designed to allow users to quickly and efficiently display, edit, and store genealogical information. This allows you to access our large database of genealogical information in real time. The browser will run on Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, XP, and ME.

Because Genealogy Browser uses a Windows Active X control to launch, you must have Internet Explorer installed on your computer. A plug-in has been developed to allow you to run the browser from Netscape as well. If you attempt to use Genealogy Browser from Netscape, you will be prompted to download and install this plug-in.

Genealogy Browser can be run on Macintosh and Linux-based computers using additional software. Virtual PC is a program that allows you to run PC programs using a Macintosh. CrossOver Office, or free-ware version Wine, is a program that allows you to run Windows programs on Linux. Using these programs, you are able to run Internet Explorer and Genealogy Browser.

Certain Personal Firewall and Anti-virus software have default settings that prevent Genealogy Browser from accessing the Internet. Allowing the OneGreatFamily Genealogy Browser or all OneGreatFamily programs access through your firewall will prevent this problem. The reference error 12029 is often displayed when firewall related conflicts occur.

Because Genealogy Browser uses an Active X control, your Internet Explorer security settings will need to allow you to download and use Active X controls. You can edit these settings by selecting Tools, Internet Options, and Security. Your settings should be at Medium or lower if you are using the default settings. If you have set custom settings, be sure you have selected to allow Active X downloads and scripting.

We hope the above information will be helpful in launching the OneGreatFamily Genealogy Browser. For more information on Genealogy Browser compatibility issues, please see our Frequently Asked Questions.

     Success Story

    It Works!

The following success story shows what can happen when OneGreatFamily finds information in your family tree that can be matched and merged with others:
I have been a member since May 2003. I entered a new ancestor on August 6 -- a Katherine Saunders b 1480 in Surrey, England. I checked my tree, British Family Lines, the next day. It had grown from this 1 new ancestor (which was generation # 17 and a total of 126 ancestors) to generation 118 and 1443 ancestors!!!

I am so boggled, I don't know where to start! Just looking at all the names, the unbelievable antiquity, the history, and the famous people -- it is incredible and so exciting. I never dreamed it would work like this. I thought I may get lucky and get back to maybe 1000AD.

Thank you so much for your wonderful program and site. It has brought so much pleasure to my family and myself. Much more researching to go on other family lines! Happy researching!

    Kind Regards,
    Diane Goldsmith
