    What a great gift idea!!!

Or, like many of us do, forget to get something for that special someone? Don't be caught making a mad dash to the mall at the 11th hour.

What gift could be better than the gift of family history?

Wasting time: Solving the problem of genealogy duplication
By Emily Jensen--Genealogy databaser for Worldvitalrecords.com

Besides being patient, hard-working, and curious, genealogists also need to have a sense of humor when coming across some of Murphy's Laws of Genealogy:

    - You never asked your father about his family when he was alive because you were not interested in genealogy then. *

    - You finally find your great grandparent's wedding records and discover that the brides' father was named John Smith. *

    - The public ceremony in which your distinguished ancestor participated in and at which the platform collapsed under him turned out to be a hanging.*

While many will be able to relate and smile at these and like setbacks, one of Murphy's Laws of Genealogy the genealogist does not want realized follows:

After years of researching and painstakingly putting together your genealogy puzzles, you find out after publishing your records, that around 80 percent of these records have already been recorded and are duplications.

One genealogist, J. Thomas Fyans, tells how he found out his genealogical records had been duplicated: "To determine the extent to which such duplication exists, I took my genealogical records to a professional research institute. They compared my records with their name pool and determined that they already had ninety-five percent of my records in their file. That means that only five percent of my records are unique to me. Thirty-four other clients shared my ancestry…At my request, the institute took a sampling of clients from all parts of the United States? These names were compared with records in their name pool, and it was determined that eighty percent were duplicates. Only twenty percent were unique." From "Ours is a Shared Ancestry" Ensign, 1978.
